Les Dennis To Star In Smash Hit Play, Jigsy, At The Royal Court Theatre.
Inspired by legendary Liverpool funny man, Jackie Hamilton, Jigsy is written by Tony Staveacre and the play has already wowed audiences around the U.K. and now the play is coming home, in more ways than one.
Jigsy is a jobbing Liverpool comic. Over the last thirty years he has worked with them all and he’ll tell you the stories to prove it. From laughs down the pub to the horror stories of when it goes wrong on stage, Jigsy was there with a permanent pint in hand.
Les Dennis has been a firm favourite of television audiences for the last four decades, since his days on the Russ Abbott Madhouse and The Russ Abbott Show, through to glory days as a game show host on Family Fortunes. His theatre work has been outstanding with roles in Chicago, Hairspray, Legally Blonde and Peter Pan, the last three in his home town of Liverpool. He also was critically well received for his role in When We Are Married which was on at the Playhouse Theatre in Liverpool.
“Jigsy has been a labour of love, based loosely on the life of one of my heroes. I knew and worked with the great Jackie Hamilton and when I first read the play I knew it was tailor made for me and for a Liverpool audience. As well as being a comic’s tale. Jigsy is a play that breathes life into Liverpool’s heritage, with stories of growing up on Scotland Road, working on the docks and Cammell Laird’s shipyard. It has been a wonderful experience performing around the U.K., but bringing it back to mine and Jackie’s home city, is the biggest thrill of all” said Les.
What’s on Stage said of the show, “Gold…I’ve not laughed so heartily nor been so carefully touched by a show for ages”
It is always good to have Les Dennis back in the city he calls home and never more so when he is on stage performing in a show of such calibre.
