Gold for Grainger… at Last

After three successive Olympic silver medals, Katherine Grainger can now cry tears of happiness as she breezes into first place, with Anna Watkins to take Gold in the women’s double sculls.

Having waited over a decade, Grainger powered forward helped by a mighty contribution from Watkins and a howling crowd of 30,000 who chanted “GB GB GB,” throughout the entire race at Eton’s Dorney Lake.

The pair got off to a great start, leading by almost a second in the first 500m over Australia, continually extending the gap as they reached 1000m.

Finishing the race with “Oh my God,” Grainger was shell-shocked.

Commenting on her victory, she said, ”I feel this medal of all of them is the people’s medal. I feel so many people have been behind me and supported me and wanted this for me as much as I have.”
