Countryside Summer Retreats

It’s easy to be drawn to the coast for a UK summer break, but we say escape the crowds and head inland this summer! The coast is where you go to party, but the countryside is where you go to chill. Think national parks and long walks ending in a cosy country pub where you can sit in a beer garden and enjoy a few drinks with your friends.

Wiltshire
Hillside B&B
 Salisbury

Grasp the opportunity to visit one of England’s most unique historic sights this summer with a stay at Hill Side B&B, just 25 minutes from Stonehenge. The B&B has a Scandinavian log cabin available for groups, with a private lounge and kitchen. It costs £100 per night – great value if there are four students sharing – and you can prepare meals and bring along your own drinks to keep costs down further. While you’re in the area, take in a spectacular sunrise at Stonehenge or hop on a bicycle to explore the Wiltshire countryside.

Dartmoor National Park
Moorland Hotel

Film students will know that Spielberg used Dartmoor National Park as a prime location for his movie version of War Horse, so if
Hollywood has spotted its potential, it must be worth a visit! The scenery is stunning, plus you have the option of giving activities like canoeing or climbing a try. Set in the middle of the park, Moorland Hotel offers double en-suite rooms from just £40 per night. It may be a quiet country escape, but the on-site bar means you can still enjoy a few beverages in the evening.

Somerset
The Anchor Inn
 Taunton

The Anchor Inn, in the heart of the Somerset countryside, has a fab beer garden, perfect for a relaxing few drinks in the sun. Double rooms are great value, starting at just £49.50 per night. Chill out during the day exploring some of Somerset’s beautiful villages on foot or even plan a country pub crawl to take in some of the lovely little local pubs!

The Yorkshire Dales
Wellington Inn
, Nidderdale

The delights of the Dales are certainly worth discovering. Bring your bike along for a stay at the Wellington Inn, where you can enjoy daily cycles on the Dales in some of Britain’s best countryside. Make up for all the calories you’ve burned off each evening by tucking into the inn’s classic Yorkshire fare and homemade pies and sampling plenty of the locally brewed beer. Wellington Inn is located in the pretty village of Nidderdale and double rooms start at £55 per night.

South Downs
The Bull’s Head
, Chichester

The South Downs National Park in West Sussex makes for a beautiful summer break. Stay at The Bulls Head for a real taste of the countryside – this traditional inn in the village of Fishbourne has all the hallmarks of a great rural pub. With twin en-suite rooms from £70 per night, it’s affordable and you have the added bonus of an inviting, characterful bar on site. Get out onto the South Downs where there is so much to do, from trail walks to paragliding. There are also designated BBQ areas, so grab a few friends and plan an afternoon drinks and BBQ session.
