Record Equalling Scott Takes Lead

Adam Scott

Australia’s Adam Scott hit a 64 at Royal Lytham & St Annes today to equal the course record in an Open Championship, heading up a strong leaderboard that sees the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els just a few shots off the lead. These three big names of the game are joined by two other former major champions in Graeme McDowell and Bubba Watson at three under par, whilst Scott, who is currently on six under par, has Scotland’s ex-Open champion Paul Lawrie, America’s Zach Johnson and Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts closely behind him on five under.

Much of the build-up had been focused on the state of the British weather and how it was going to affect the course, but the tournament got under way in perfect conditions which Scott was only too quick to capitalise on.

However, much of the focus on day two will be on the fourteen-time major champion Tiger Woods as he sits in a comfortable position where he will be ready to attack. The amount of talent on the leaderboard is a testimony to how well many of golfing’s elite took to the course, though there were disappointing performances from Lee Westwood (+3) and Darren Clarke (+6) who are practically out of contention already. England’s Luke Donald finished on level par for the day but will need to push on if he wants to have any chance of a maiden major victory.

All in all, it makes for an exciting day two, with conditions looking more favourable to those who will be going out later in the day.
